About the party
מֶרֶצ היא מפלגת שמאל סוציאל-דמוקרטית ציונית ישראלית. המפלגה הורכבה בשנת 1992 מאיחוד של המפלגות רצ, מפ"ם וחלק משינוי. השם מרצ מורכב מהאותיות מ' ורצ, אותיות שהופיעו על פתקי ההצבעה של המייסדות, מפ"ם ורצ. המפלגה הייתה בשיאה בכנסת ה-13, כשזכתה ל-12 מנדטים והייתה שותפה בכירה בממשלת רבין השנייה. לראשונה מאז הממשלה ה-28 ממנה פרשה ב-2000, הייתה מרצ שותפה בממשלת ישראל ה-36. יושב ראש המפלגה לשעבר (שלא התמודד שוב), ניצן הורוביץ, כיהן כשר הבריאות, וכן כיהנו מטעמה תמר זנדברג כשרה להגנת הסביבה, עיסאווי פריג' כשר לשיתוף פעולה אזורי ויאיר גולן כסגן שרת הכלכלה והתעשייה. בשנת 2022 הגיעה מרצ לשפל כוחה בבחירות לכנסת העשרים וחמש. זהבה גלאון נבחרה ליושבת ראש המפלגה בבחירות מקדימות. בסוף הבחירות המפלגה לא עברה את אחוז החסימה וחסרו לה כ-4,000 קולות כדי להיכנס לכנסת. המפלגה לא נכנסה לכנסת לראשונה מאז היווסדה. ב-30 ביוני 2024 התאחדה המפלגה עם מפלגת העבודה למפלגת "הדמוקרטים".
